The Literacy and Resource project is working to produce resources to improve literacy in Timorese schools. The books are published inTetun, the resources such as alphabet cards, produced in the official languages of the country and are culturally appropriate. The Alola Education team demonstrates how to best use these resources in the classroom with teachers and children.

We are also producing toys that promote educational development for students at Pre-Primary and Primary level Friendship Schools. At Alola we believe that early intervention and the development of literacy skills is very important in the fight to improve literacy.
The Literacy and Resource Project works with the Government of Timor-Leste to improve the quality and creativity of teaching methods in schools through teacher training workshops.
The Literacy and Resource Project conducts regular Teacher Development Workshops to increase understanding of the Project and to increase teacher involvement. The workshops are being conducted in six districts and includes a focus on the promotion the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

School Holiday Program

As schools were closed for 3 months, the Alola Foundation along with Care International conducted a pilot program in 16 community centres across 9 districts. Many of these programs were linked to our friendship schools.

The “School Holiday Program” provided over 3000 children with educational games and the opportunity to train over160 youth. This program was so well received by the Ministry of Education, the community leaders, parents and especially the children that it will be considered as a model for future “School Holiday programs”.

Friendship Schools

There are currently 84 Friendship Schools in 11 of the 13 districts of Timor Leste. Each school is partnered with a school in Australia, Hong Kong and other countries. In each of these schools we are providing resources conducting activities and establishing a friendship with children around the world.

Schools started back in the first week of October, 2008. The Alola Education team is now planning schools visits across the country to assist teachers and provide children with new activities. In October we will visit the districts of Viqueque, Ainaro, Manufahi, Dili and Baucau.
