The Advocacy programs of the Alola Foundation provide a forum for local NGOs and women’s groups from across the country. We work closely with other women's organisations and with relevant government ministries to promote women's leadership at all levels of society and to give women the confidence to have a voice and to make a difference in their communities.

We have a range of programs designed to strengthen women's pariticipation in civil society which include:

Womens Resource Centre

Widow Support Project

Gulbenkian Health Promotion Small Grants

District Support Workers in 13 Districts

Program to Combat Human Trafficking

Campaigns

Haburas Labarik - Child Rights project - more information to come soon

We also participate in regular campaigns to raise women's issues in the community as they arise.

Advocacy Strategies

• Women’s resource centre
• Campaigns for women’s rights & women’s health
• Provide development opportunities for women
• Create a woman friendly space
• Provide humanitarian assistance

One of Alola’s first missions was advocacy on behalf of seperated children and other victims of violent conflict. The case of Juliana dos Santos provided the inspiration for this role. As a more general way of combating these issues, Alola has established a Women’s Resource Centre.

The District Support Worker program was established in mid 2007 which has enabled Alola to reach out to women's groups across Timor-Leste.

And the Gulbenkian Health Promotion Small Grants program means we can provide grants for women's groups to take initiative to address their own health promotion needs as they see fit.

Humanitarian Assistance and Referral

Many women visit the Alola Foundation for support and we provide material assistance through locally purchased items. The Women’s Resource Centre may link women to one of Alola's economic empowerment programs, advocacy or support groups. Alola also supports women to access services from a range of other support agencies in East Timor.

For example the District Support Workers from Liquica, Ermera, Baucau and Viqueuque sought assistance for displaced people camping in their districts. The DSWs distributed clothing, laundry and bath soap from Oxfam and vegetable seeds from the Ministry of Agriculture.
