Humanitarian
Assistance and Material
Donations
Cash Donations are always preferred over material goods.
Why?
The Alola Foundation
promotes local employment and
supports the Timor-Leste
economy.
How?
• We employ women in Timor-Leste
to produce goods
required for our
programs
• We buy
supplies
from local businesses.
This injects money into the local economy which circulates throughout the community.
Why not donated goods?
• Most items can now be purchased in Timor-Leste - often more cheaply than in Australia
• Timorese market stallholders sell cheap, good quality secondhand clothes
• A container costs
up to $9000
• Goods can attract between 12% - 50% import
tax, plus US$75 administration fee
• Transport, storage, sorting and distribution is expensive and consumes valuable staff time
• Too often donated goods are unusable and simply add to the already severe rubbish disposal problem in Timor-Leste.
With cash donations we work with people to respect their dignity, allowing people to stay in control of their circumstances and to buy the clothes that best suit their own needs.
Thank you most
sincerely for your
support for the
work of the Alola
Foundation and,
through us, for
the women and children
of Timor-Leste.
