It was a very sad day when we all said goodbye to our first CEO, Anne Bunning.
Anne arrived in May 2006, the day before the shooting began in the hills and spread into Dili. She had a baptism by fire but stayed in Dili throughout the crisis and not only helped everyone to stay calm and focussed but she helped the whole organisation to grow and develop in astounding ways.
Throughout the crisis Alola provided support and humanitarian aid for women and children who fled to Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps. This despite many of Alola's staff being among its victims.
At the same time, Anne led the organisation through a very simple but effective strategic planning process. Everyone identified the needs of the community and examined Alola's priorities, strengths and resources. As a result, all Alola's programs have grown, staff are confident about their roles and everyone is working very effectively to meet our new program objectives.
As you may know, Anne had to rush back to Adelaide in September last year after her son had a very serious accident. There were over 80 hearts and minds focussed on Anne and Tom over the following weeks as we all hoped and prayed for his recovery.
Anne continued to provide leadership, direction and support for the staff over the following months, working from Adelaide and visiting Dili for weeks at a time to oversee the programs.
Unfortunately, in May 2007, Anne decided to resign from the CEO position so she could concentrate on her family needs. We are all very sad to lose Anne's incredible wisdom, support, international development expertise, women stars, large heart and gentle but firm management style.
Alola has grown substantially, stabilised and focussed its programs and everyone works with far greater confidence, energy and commitment because of Anne's clear sighted vision and leadership.
Thanks Anne. We hope you will visit us often! (Photos: The traditional dressing in the Tais to farewell Anne)
