Panel 5: Symbols & Motifs
S1) Ancestral
Being
Oecussi. Naturally spun and dyed
cotton with plaited fringe. Predominantly
blue with white central symbols
with brown and red stripes.
Ancestral beings appear as a cross
between sacred animals and humans.
The male anthropomorphic figure
that appears here represents the
ancestors living in a supernatural
realm who are believed to protect
the wearer of the Textile.
S2) Natural Dyed Tall House
Los Palos, Female, W 130 L 110.
Naturally spun and dyed cotton
in predominantly grey-blue with
oche-pink stripes. Patterning
of double headed gecko and tall
house roof.
In each district people have their
own designs such as the gecko,
teak and taro leaves, stylised
representations of crocodiles,
horses, houses, fruit seeds and
birds, especially chickens and
roosters.
S3) ‘Angels & Flowers,
Delphina Guterres Silva’
Unknown origin, Female, W 148
L 95.
Multicolored stripes, outside
patterning of pink angels, flowers
and weaver’s name ‘Delphina
Guterres Silva’.
European names and motifs were
introduced to local weavers by
Portuguese Christian missionaries
who first came in the 16th Century.
In many districts brightly colored
floral motifs are thought to be
derived from Portuguese embroidery
books and church decorations.
