YOUTH EMPOWERMENT IN PEACE AND SECURITY MATTERS BECOMES TOPIC OF ALOLA SRF MONTHLY DISCUSSION FOR MARCH

(Alolamedia/Dili) — The Alola Foundation, through its Advocacy program, continues to demonstrate its dedication to strengthening the knowledge of young people in Timor-Leste. In an environment filled with a spirit of learning, we invite you to learn more about our monthly discussion activity held at the Women’s Resource Center (SRF) in Taibesi.

As part of its mission, the Alola Foundation’s Women’s Resource Center (SRF) provides various training for youth and students to enhance their capacity and prepare them for globalization. SRF-Alola has become a skilled mentor for all younger generations and students, helping them quickly adapt to new situations related to ongoing changes.

To achieve this important goal, on Friday (March 27), SRF-Alola—temporarily located in the Taibesi area (formerly the veterans’ site)—once again organized a Monthly Discussion activity with the topic Youth, Peace, and Security. The activity, supported by the Secretary of State for Equality (SEI), was officially opened by Alola’s Advocacy Program Manager, Ms. Maria Evelina. It was attended by nearly 50 youth and students from various institutions, including 5 de Maio Secondary School, Amigo de Jesus Taibessi, Cristal, 12 Novembru, 4 Setembru, as well as students from UNTL, Unpaz, Unital, members of the Rotaract Club, and youth beneficiaries of SRF-Alola.

In her speech, Ms. Maria Evelina emphasized the vital role of youth as the pillars of the nation.

“Since the majority of Timor-Leste’s population consists of young people, through this peace and security discussion organized by Alola, we can strengthen national resilience, reduce gender-based violence, and prepare a new generation of leaders who can guarantee a national future living in peace,” said Ms. Maria Evelina.

She also focused on creating a friendly environment in schools to prevent conflicts among students.

“There are many problems at the school level, especially among students who often face issues… Therefore, the Alola Foundation creates a space for early prevention before incidents occur. Furthermore, it is so that youth can become pioneers or mirrors for other young people,” she added.

To facilitate this important discussion, the SRF-Alola team invited Mr. Jose Helder Soares, a youth activist and advocate in the field of Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS). He shared information to ensure youth have a good understanding of peace and act as a “mirror” or an example that creates friendly spaces for everyone, including women and minority groups. As a youth activist and advocate, Mr. Jose Helder Soares did not only share knowledge but also worked to change the perception of youth to become strategic partners who can strengthen long-term peace and security in Timor-Leste.

“In the Youth, Peace, and Security Agenda, we ensure youth participation, protection for youth, conflict prevention among youth, and guarantee partnerships that can support youth, as well as support peace and security for the young,” explained Mr. Jose Helder Soares during the presentation.

The nearly 50 youths in attendance were very proud to have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge on the issues of Youth, Peace, and Security. Natercia Bano, a student from Cristal representing the other participants, expressed her gratitude to the Alola Foundation.

“I am truly grateful for this good space provided to me. I learned a lot, and Youth, Peace, and Security is very important. It teaches how youth can prevent conflict, and also for us as young people, how not to discriminate against those who make mistakes in the community. Thank you,” said Natercia Bano Barreto.

Since this initiative began implementation in 2003, SRF-Alola has provided various capacity-building sessions, ranging from computer literacy, using the internet for digital references, positive communication through social media, public speaking, leadership courses, and proposal writing. Additionally, the center offers educational sessions on gender equality, youth advocacy, and other critical social issues.

After two decades, WRC-Alola has evolved into a solid institution dedicated to empowering women and youth. In addition to technical training and proposal development for women’s groups, the center serves as a vital hub providing information services, free internet access, and a specialized mini-library. To date, thousands of young women and men have utilized these resources to excel in their academic activities, secure employment, and participate in civic activities.

The Alola Foundation remains open to all youth to access information and grow their capacities. For those who wish to increase their knowledge, SRF-Alola welcomes them during working hours, Monday to Friday (08:30 – 17:30).

This activity affirms that security is a collective responsibility, and through inclusive dialogues like this, we prepare the future leaders of Timor-Leste to uphold peace, justice, and equality to create a strong nation.
