Esperansca Dau Usa is a 65-year-old grandmother who lives in Tankae hamlet, Balibar village, Cristo Rei Administrative Post. She lives alone, and sometimes one of her grandchildren stays with her temporarily. She doesn’t have a toilet and has been using the neighbor’s toilet every day, including at night time. When the ALFA team, composed of a health worker, Fundasaun Alola, and the village leader visited her at home, they noticed that she did not have a toilet.
Therefore, they advised her about the importance of building her own toilet. A few days later, she followed the advice and started to build her own toilet, including digging a septic tank. The toilet was built close to her house, which made her happy because as an elderly woman, she no longer needs to go far to reach the toilet, especially when it rains or at night time.
