In 2023-2024, various activities have been carried out by Alola Liaison Officers (HLOs) who are assigned to hospitals, such as assisting mothers to make skin-to-skin contact with newborns, helping to initiate the first breastfeeding, and providing assistance to postpartum mothers in position breast-feed.

Outreach activities were also carried out by HLO Alola for 3,233 mothers, families and caregivers regarding the importance of giving birth in hospital, distribution of maternity packages, giving colostrum to babies, exclusive breastfeeding, family planning, providing information on malaria, diarrhea and acute respiratory infections (ARI).

 

In the same year, as many as 597 children were beneficiaries of the Alola playroom which was provided as a special facility for patients and their families to take a break from the stress of the medical aspect of the hospital, while developing their emotional, physical, and social skills through play.

 

Below is the summary report of the 2023 progress and achievements of the MCH program activities which implemented through Health Facility and Community Based.

SUPPORTING NEWBORN CARE PROGRAM AND PROVIDING COUNSELLING ON BREASTFEEDING AT HEALTH FACILITY.

 

Through the year, Hospital liaison Officer (HLO) at Dili National Hospital, Baucau and Maubisse Regional Hospital as well as Oecusse Referral Hospital have provided counselling for pregnant and lactating women who visited and admitted at the hospital. In addition and education on the importance of breastfeeding and risk of formula feeding has been provided to the family members and their who accompany the mothers during their stay at the hospital. Moreover , the HLO had provided support for newborn care on skin-to-skin contact and early initiation of breastfeeding for new born babies, provided support on breastfeeding positioning and attachments for both mother and babies as well as kangaroo mother care. Each of the HLO works rotated within the hospital in the maternity room, perinatology, OPD and paediatric ward in all three referral and national hospitals from January– December 2023. Within 2023, a number of breastfeeding problems were attended and solved by the HLO members including cases of inverted nipples, no breast milk, engorgement and mastitis.

Playrooms in Baucau Regional hospital was a great place for patients and their families to take a break from the stress of the medical aspect of the hospital, while developing their emotional, physical, and social skills through play.

 

In 2023, Playroom Officer has created especial atmosphere for animated children included performing entertainment with children, teaching children to sing songs, painting, playing with toys, drawing, writing, reading Lafaek Magazine, watching children’s cartoon movies and breastfeeding movies. As result 597 children have been animated during the year.

 

In addition, HLO provided information and counselling for 3,233 mothers, families and caregivers on the importance of giving birth in hospitals, distribution of maternity packages, babies having colostrum, exclusive breastfeeding, family planning, providing information on malaria, diarrhoea, acute respiratory infections (ARI). Through playroom, HLO educates parents and children on personal hygiene and also provides counselling for parents on how to prepare healthy food for children.
