Fundasaun Alola continues to be praised for its contribution since 2003 in improving the health of mothers and children in the country.

The 2016 TLDHS study showed a significant increase in maternal and child health, where the number of mothers giving birth in health facilities increased from 22% to 49% and the number of deliveries assisted by health personnel also increased from 30 to 57%. In addition, the infant mortality rate has been reduced from 45 to 30 per 1000 live births and the rate of under-nutrition has also decreased from 58% to 46%, and stunting from 45% to 40%.

Although Timor-Leste has made a significant increase in reducing the mortality rate, efforts need to be made to continue to improve maternal and child health, especially to address the problem of malnutrition in children under 5 years which continues to be a critical problem for our country.

To respond to this critical issue, the Alola Foundation’s Maternal and Child Health program uses a variety of strategies at the national and city levels to support women to access health facilities including national hospitals, puskesmas and health posts.

Fortifying community members to become critical with a deep awareness to contribute and take responsibility for maternal and child health problems in their environment is a strategy adopted and implemented by Alola in designing and implementing activities in national and rural areas.
